Postby gdp-it » Thu Feb 04, 2010 12:35 pm

Hi Guys
Does anyone use good inexpensive filtering software ? I tried a few in the past but they blocked so many sites that were genuine we had complaints and had to manual allow each site/page after the complaint. Any advice on sucessful software from members appreciated
thanks

You could use OpenDNS, it's completely free and has extensive content filtering options.

No software to install
Just create an account online
enter you public IP address
set your router DNS for OpenDNS
thats it

opps
set the level of filtering you require - its very simple just tick the box

Hello Brendan,

Excuse me, what do you mean "set your router DNS for OpenDNS"?

Regards,
Serge.

Instead of using your ISP's DNS servers (which is the default setting), you can manually set which DNS servers your router uses, so all you need to enter there is 208.67.222.222 for primary and 208.67.220.220 for secondary DNS. After that, all computers connected trough that router will use OpenDNS automatically.

Reef is spot on -
also works
if you sent the DNS on the server only for the Internet NIC
Its really is good considering it Free
Most of the schools here use it

hi, does any one know how to block porn sites on a small network of 5 computers, connected via adsl modem ??

i have tried "opendns" and found that once i change the dns address the internet browsing really slows down so not interested in that, apart from that option does any body knows a good software, web filter, or a adsl modem capable of blocking porn sites ??

If your computers are set up to use your router's DNS caching, you will only need to change the DNS servers in your router. Otherwise you will need to change the DNS server on all your computers.

There is a very good product called Access proxy: http://www.accessproxy.eu

There are trial versions available with full functionality and it is free for private use on one computer.

The product does very accurate filtering, without blocking educational or related content. It can be set up as a bridge so all filtering is completely transparent and no client configuration is required.

The filter server can filter many hundreds of clients on a normal modern computer, without any visible delay to the clients.
